Sumatra Mandheling tasting notes often describe it as earthy and intense with an herbal aroma, unique to the region and not found in South American or African coffees. With just enough acidity to provide a vibrancy, Mandheling coffee often exhibits tones of sweet chocolate and licorice. Mandheling is a trade name, used for arabica coffee from northern Sumatra. It was derived from the name of the Mandailing people, who produce coffee in the Tapanuli region of Sumatra. Sumatran coffee’s unique characteristics stem from wet hulling. The modified natural processing method and extended drying time produce coffees with muted flavors and aromas. Instead of being known for their notes, Sumatran coffees are typically characterized by their full bodies and low acidity. Coffee thrived in Sumatra’s environment; it quickly became one of the world’s largest coffee producers, and remains so. To this day, most Sumatra coffee is grown near Lake Toba, which is the largest volcanic lake in the world, and sits about 1000ft above sea level. Many of the islands of Indonesia were formed by volcanoes. Therefore, they are mountainous and have rich soil that is ideal for growing coffee. It is no wonder that some of the world’s most famous coffees are grown on the islands of the Malay Archipelago of Indonesia: Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java. Approximately 15% of all the coffee grown in Indonesia is Arabica. Sumatra is the second-largest island of the Republic of Indonesia. Sumatra Mandheling coffee is grown on the lofty volcanic slopes of Mount Leuser near the port of Padang in the Balak region of west-central Sumatra.
